Pet Friendly Holidays

Wondering what to do with the moggy or pooch for the holidays? In Northern Ireland, you can count your pet in on your plans, with loads to keep them purring or wagging their tails all day long.  

You’re spoilt for choice with some fantastic and spectacular walks in Northern Ireland. You’ll also find plenty of pet friendly places to eat and stay nearby to help you plan your trip better. Here are your county-by-county best in show.  

Dog friendly walks to dog friendly hotels in Northern Ireland 

You will adore the Antrim Cliff Path to Dunseverick Castle. This 5-mile section of the longer 33-mile Causeway Coast Way features some spectacular cliff landscape that’s sure to please you and your best friend. You will pass about 100m above a series of coves and undulate past dramatic scenery via Benbane Head, Hamilton’s Seat at the highest point before reaching Dunseverick Castle for a well-earned rest. 

Both you and your doggy are welcome to chow down in The Fullerton Arms (4*) in Ballintoy. You can even stay the night here or at the pet-friendly Marine Hotel (3*) in Ballycastle and The Inn on the Coast (3*) near Portrush.  

Next up is the Divis Ridge Trail Belfast. On this 4.2-mile circular trail located in the Belfast Hills, you’ll get spectacular skyline views of the city below and see as far as the Mourne Mountains, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The walk itself is relatively flat on tarmac, boardwalk and stone pitched gravel paths – so perfect for whatever size doggy you have in tow. Pitch up to the Divis Coffee Barn in Hannahstown for a post-walk nibble or treat your buddy to a visit to the Doggy Dock at The Dirty Onion. If you need a place to stay, the AC Hotel (4*) is a little piece of doggy heaven.  

The Fitzwilliam Hotel is another place in Belfast where your four legged doggie friend can stay the night and enjoy the five star experience along with the rest of the family.

The Rabbit Hotel and Retreat, just 20 minutes outside Belfast in Templepatrick is also opening its doors to your dog, allowing them to be part of your family break away.

Mongrels in the Mournes 

Further south down the coast, you and doggy have to give Murlough National Nature Reserve in Dundrum, a go. This 2.5 mile long walk has stunning views of the Mourne Mountains and Dundrum Castle that we know you will love. You can also access Murlough Beach via the reserve if your pawed pal still needs more things to sniff out!   The Bakers Cottage (5*) in Seaforde welcomes pets to stay the night – and you too! 

At the foot of the Mourne Mountains, you’ll find Tollymore Forest Park, Bryansford . You’ll revel in its amazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and sea. A walk along the Shimna River will raise a few curious canine eyebrows with some interesting features, like a barn dressed like a church. The forest was also a filming location for Game of Thrones®. 

Let them go barking mad in Silent Valley 

If you still have the energy or need a new route, Silent Valley Mountain Park is just a short drive away. A stop-off at Hugh McCann’s in Newcastle for a well-deserved nibble is a must. As for a place to rest a pair of tired heads, dogs are definitely welcome at Kribben Cottages (4*) in Annalong  - check their site for proof! 

You’ll find loads to keep yourself and your pooch intrigued at Rowallane Garden in Saintfield. If your dog loves a good run around or a game of fetch, then you must visit the outdoor exercise area where dogs are allowed to roam free from their leads. You won’t need to go far for a treat as the Café at Rowallane is on your walk while a few miles out the road Late & Early Cottage (4*) is a delightful haven of rest for dog and owner. 

Frisky and free in County Fermanagh 

Let’s head west to beautiful County Fermanagh. Here, the Fairy Trail at Lusty Beg Island in Kesh is a fun adventure around this small island for your pet, whether young or old. You’ll find beautiful views over the Fermanagh Lakes and scenic walks through the woodlands – so, perfect for dog walking. 

Another to add to your list is the National Trust gem of Castle Coole which offers the perfect place to take your dog for a nice brisk walk and explore Ireland’s only island town of nearby Enniskillen, and Lough Erne. 

There’s delicious food for you both on site at the Lusty Beg Island Restaurant or a short drive away at Killyhevlin Lakeside Hotel & Lodges in Enniskillen. There’s no shortage of pet-friendly places to stay either. The Lusty Beg Island Resort and Spa, Killyhevlin Lakeside Hotel & Lodges, and Belmore Court and Motel in Enniskillen are ready to welcome you both. 

Dog friendly in County Londonderry 

Venturing towards the northern coastline, you and your best friend will adore the Port Path in Portstewart. At 6.5 miles in length, this scenic route between Portstewart and Portrush is a good, medium length walk for you both. You’ll have beautiful panoramic sea views towards Donegal and the Scottish Isles too. For a shorter jaunt, try Portstewart Strand, a Blue Flag beach where you’re sure to meet other owners and pals to say hello to. 

You could also try Castlerock Beach, Downhill Beach or Whiterocks Beach for a change of scenery. Or try the nature walks of Mountsandel Forest and Somerset Forest. 

Right on the beach, Harry’s Shack in Portstewart is the perfect stop-off to recharge your tired feet and paws. Along the coast, check into The Lodge Hotel in Coleraine. Woof woof!
