About

Inspired by Carrickfergus's military legacy, The Guard Room has been sympathetically restored and recreated within the gaol house building of Carrickfergus Town Hall.  This immersive experience transports visitors back to the early 20th century, reimagining the original quarters of the Antrim Artillery militia, unveiling the authentic atmosphere of a bygone era, where rule-breaking soldiers were held to account.

Delve deeper into the annals of history as you explore the exhibition's modular bookshelves, seamlessly blending graphic panels, interactive features, and setworks to narrate the Guard Room's tale. From the construction of the Franciscan Friary in 1232 to the installation of the Knight Ride in 1992, every corner of this site exudes the echoes of centuries past.

For those hungry for more, our media album is a treasure trove of archival images, while the replica cell beckons you to experience the building from a prisoner's perspective!

Whether you're a visitor or a resident, The Guard Room serves as a bridge connecting Carrickfergus Museum, Castle, and the town's broader heritage, inviting all to journey through over 800 years of history.  Don't miss your chance to step into the past at The Guard Room exhibition!

This restoration project offers a captivating journey into the past, thanks to the Carrickfergus Townscape Heritage Initiative, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Council, and the Heritage Council of Ireland through the Irish Walled Towns Network.
