It may have taken 68 years for The Open Championship to return to Northern Ireland but it was more than worth the wait as home favourite Shane Lowry emerged triumphant at Royal Portrush. After its hugely successful staging of The Open in 2019, Royal Portrush will serve as host again. The Open will now head back to the County Antrim coast in 2025 for The 153rd Open Championship.
The Open attracted a record attendance for the Championship outside of St Andrews back in 2019, of 237,750 fans throughout the week. More than 5,400 hours of television coverage were broadcast to hundreds of millions of viewers globally as Irishman Shane Lowry performed superbly to become Champion Golfer of the Year and lift the famous Claret Jug.
