About

Visitors fall in love with the Avish and don't want to leave. Restored, decorated and furnished in a uniquely Irish style, with original local crafts and artwork on display, it's homely, comfortable and full of charm. A warm welcome is extended to guests from home and abroad (we can even speak French!)

The cottage is set high on a wooded hillside outside Derry. It's just a ten-minute drive from the city, and is ideally located for touring the Causeway Coast and Donegal. The Avish grounds are private and extensive, and include a courtyard, garden, patio with barbecue facilities, paddock and woodland area. We encourage visitors to make full use of the spiral herb garden, fruit bushes, strawberry pots and rhubarb patch. There's pleny of room for parking in the courtyard, and covered parking space as well in one of the outhouses. The old barn has a drying line for clothes - to complement the tumble dryer!

The house is spacious and very well furnished and equipped. There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with two singles. The mezzanine space above the sitting room has a good double sofa bed, so the house can easily sleep six. The bathroom has a walk-in power shower and a cast-iron bath. There's a large kitchen and a separate skullery or utility room with full washing facilities and a small freezer.

Bed linens, all cotton, are provided, as are films, books and games. There's also WiFi, TV, DVD player etc. - modern comforts in an ancient setting! The cottage is heated mainly by woodburning stoves, which, along with the solar panels, hemp insulation and composting facilities, are part of the eco-policy that drove the restoration of the house. The environment is fantastic here and our aim is to preserve it as best we can.

Visitors love the Avish, whatever their age, for it's a real home from home and the welcome is warm. We want people to make the most of their stay in the area, and do our best to it a happy and memorable experience.
