The benefits of a good walk in the outdoors and connecting with nature has been proven to lift our moods, so why not blow the winter cobwebs off with some of these suggestions. If you are looking for some low cost or free places to visit, then we have got you covered. Here you'll find great walking trails for all the family, from gentle strolls perfect for a sunny afternoon to longer hikes that will get your heart pumping. Lace up your boots and uncover the beauty of Northern Ireland!

Roe Valley Country Park, County Londonderry

Scenic and tranquil - the perfect location for a mindful walk and getting back to nature. The riverside views and woodland walks here are nothing short of spectacular. Be sure to try and spot the foxes, badgers and otters that live here.

Whiterocks Beach, County Antrim 

What better way to blow the cobwebs off than with a walk along this stunning beach on the Causeway Coastal Route. Have a relaxing walk along the golden sand with views of the iconic Whiterock cliffs. Or enjoy the path above, part of the Ulster Way, which offers stunning views both east and west of the strand. 

The Sperrin Sculpture Trail, County Tyrone 

This trail is one for the imaginative at heart. Nestled in the Sperrin Mountains lie three gentle and majestic giants. They represent the past, present and future. Follow the trail to discover the folklore of these awe-inspiring creatures at Glenelly Valley near Cranagh, Mullaghcarn Mountain and Davagh Forest.  

Pomeroy Forest, County Tyrone 

Pomeroy is one of the best forests in Northern Ireland for kids - enjoy a leisurely stroll through magical trails and discover 18 nature-based sculptures that offer an interactive adventures for all ages. Immerse yourself in nature and escape from the outside world as your walk through the forest.  

Crawfordsburn Country Park, County Down 

In County Down, sits one of Ulster’s most popular country parks. Relish in 3.5km of lovely beaches and riverside that form part of the North Down Coastal Path. There are two excellent beaches, one of which is the very popular Helens bay. The spectacular scenery and views across Belfast Lough make for a tranquil walk. Take the whole family for a stroll through peaceful meadows, wooded glens and a stunning waterfall.

Castlewellan Forest Park, County Down 

Another gem in Down, situated near the Mourne Mountains with its wooded landscape is Castlewellan. It is ideal for long walks with 7.5 miles (12km) of a walk trail network. The route used most often by families is the Lakeside Walk which is 2.4miles long (3.9Km). Your four-legged friend is welcome to accompany you too (dogs must be kept under control).    

Glenariff Forest Park, County Antrim 

The Queen of the Glens covers over 1,000 hectares with planted woodland, lakes, outdoor space. It has picnic and barbeque areas as well as a tea house for after your reviving walk through the forest. The rocky gorges of the river and the timber boardwalk provide a spectacular walk. Watch out for glimpses of wildlife like the red squirrel, hen harrier and Irish hare.

Antrim Castle Gardens, County Antrim

Vibrant colours are in store on a visit to Antrim Castle Gardens and now is the perfect time visit. Filled with botanical beauty and heritage, you will find nothing like these 400 year old gardens anywhere else in Northern Ireland. Highlights of the Grounds include the 17th Century Anglo Dutch style canals, ponds and avenues, a 12th Century motte; Victorian Pleasure Garden, Large Parterre Gardens and the Platinum Jubilee Clockwork Garden. There's just so much to explore!

Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, County Fermanagh 

Situated against the wild mountain backdrop of the Cuilcagh Mountain, the Geopark boasts over 50 stunning sites including breath-taking viewpoints, magical waterfalls, wonderful wetlands and fantastic forests; with key sites including the world famous Marble Arch Caves, and the Instagram famous Cuilcagh Boardwalk. That should be enough to tempt you to visit – be sure to snap a picture once you have reached the top of the stairway.  You can also find miles upon miles of trails here, more than enough to wander along and get some much-needed fresh air.   

Gosford Forest Park, County Armagh 

Take a stroll around the 240 acres of diverse woodland in the gentle rolling drumlin countryside. Gosford Forest Park really is an adventure paradise for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. It's the perfect place for gentle walks and challenging treks with 10 miles (16km) of multi-use trails. It's also great for wildlife spotting. It is home to a magnificent herd of red deer and seeing them up close, even if it isn’t your first time, will still catch your breath! The 2 mile (3km) woodland outdoor play area is the best adventure for all your little giants! 

Mount Stewart, County Down 

Trails to explore and gardens to wander around – Mount Stewart is perfect for a day out and getting back to nature.  Admire the gardens and wildlife come to new life at spring time. With beautiful gardens and a lake walk, now is the perfect time to appreciate the beauty of nature on the shores of Strangford Lough.  

Mussenden, County Londonderry 

Enjoy this spectacular clifftop walk with stunning views along the coast.  The grounds at Downhill Demense and Mussenden Temple are open for walkers keen to get out and enjoy a dose of fresh air. Or have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surrounding nature!  

Castle Ward, County Down 

The house is back open after Storm Eowyn and the surrounding garden and trails are once again available to enjoy.  Join in on the Picture Perfect Moments Trail.  Across the estate try and spot the 9 frames where arguably the best views are – try them out, but also try and discover your own new ones along the way.  If you fancy exploring on 2 wheels instead then try out the cycle trails.  See which species of wildlife you can spot along the way or try identifying the rare plants found here too.
