Northern Ireland has played host as a famous backdrop for many romantic movies over the years and it’s clear as to why. Stunning natural beauty, ancient historical sites, and plenty of unique experiences to bond over. It really is the perfect setting for a romantic date. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Where should you take someone on a first date? We’ve done some extensive research (a.k.a. asked the internet) and there are three main components that compose an ideal first date; A relaxed atmosphere, an engaging activity and a clear ending (You know, to avoid that awkward linger! Yikes). With that in mind, here are some casual date ideas in Belfast to make you feel as comfortable as possible and short enough that you can bear through, if it all goes wrong!
Stormont Estate - Haptik Coffee
Belfast’s impressive parliament building, Stormont Estate has two official walking routes within its grounds. One is a very manageable 2.5 miles/4 km, a fine length for a first date. The beautiful landscape will give you something to talk about if you are short for conversation. And Stormont Hotel across the street is a popular wedding venue, or so we've heard (wink, wink). Haptik Coffee is just a short 10-minute walk down the road for a post-dander rest. They will provide great grub and even greater coffee for you to get to know your date better. They also have a calendar of events throughout the year, some inspiration for date number two.
General Merchants - Belfast Castle - Cave Hill
If you really want to impress your date, then take them to see royalty. Well not exactly royalty, but a castle is pretty close. Belfast Castle Estate provides ample options for a relaxing walk. Situated at the foot of Cave Hill, it is one of the most iconic locations to view the stunning skyline of Belfast City. For the more adventurous pair, a climb to the top of Cave Hill takes roughly 2 hours, round trip. And will definitely build your appetite for a hearty lunch at General Merchants. Fried crispy prawns on grilled corn tortillas with avocado, radish, cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle yoghurt and fries... that will get your mouth watering!
Botanic Gardens - Coop coffee - Ulster Museum
There are loads to see indoor and out at the Botanic Gardens. And it's free entry, which can never hurt. Established in 1828, the plants here have seen their fair share of first dates (good and bad). To begin, grab a coffee from Coop, a favourite among locals. There is a short 0.8 mile/1.3 km circular route which is perfect for a walk as you get to know each other. Stop at one of the many benches scattered throughout the park and be calmed by the relaxing atmosphere, surrounded by nature despite it's central location. There are two greenhouses to explore here, full of plants from all over the globe. If things are going well, visit the Ulster Museum on site (which is also free entry). Galleries and exhibitions that tell of history and love stories past and present. What more could you need?
Lock Keeper's Inn - Shaw’s Bridge
Shaw's Bridge is a short circular walk along the edge of the River Lagan, named after the five-arched stone bridge that was built in 1709. This scenic route has views of wildlife and the flourishing nature, a peaceful and casual setting for your walk. The Lock Keepers Cottage is a great photo spot. Capture a picture together to remember your first date. Stop at The Lock Keepers Inn for a takeaway coffee and bring it with you. Don't forget to look out for the lock and maybe your date will give you the key to their heart.
Drip Coffee - Ormeau Park
Drip Coffee is one of the newest on Belfast's coffee scene but they have quickly gained popularity. With a delicious wide menu of lunch items, there will definitely be something to fit your date's taste buds, so you won't need to worry about that. And they serve coffee until 8pm everyday, ideal for an evening date. The iconic Ormeau Park is just a few minutes walk away and will provide the perfect activity to break the ice. Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park - Stables Coffee Shop
Covering more than 128 acres, this park has plenty of paths to walk and talk. Overflowing with plants and wildlife, it contains a walled garden and a Japanese-style garden with water features. Have a seat and talk to the sound of the fountains pouring. And, if you stop by in July, you will get to reap the full benefits of the Summer Rose Fair. How romantic! The nearby coffee shop ‘Stables’ has tea, coffee and freshly baked sweet treats, for you to enjoy if the date is going well. It is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday.
The Maritime Mile - The Snooty Owl
One of the most popular walks in Belfast is The Maritime Mile. This walk has views of the most notable attractions and landmarks in the city. From Titanic Belfast, The SSE Arena, HMS Caroline, The Big Fish and Belfast Marina. As you pass the Titanic Slipways, stop for a treat at The Snooty Owl, a small mobile trailer. They offer the best of tea, coffees, hot chocolate, homemade sweet treats and more! For thronies, keep an eye out for the stained glass installations in honour of the Game of Thrones® series.
